Rob Lewis has two distinct approaches to drawing and painting, and both employ repetition of line or form. When drawing, Lewis moves marker or pencil across paper in a circular motion and works horizontally at a table. When painting, Lewis works vertically with his canvas on an easel, repeating brushstrokes of similar sizes and shapes. All of Lewis’ work expresses movement; variations in mark-making create rhythms distinct to each piece. Lewis’ drawings and paintings also share the same approach to color – some compositions are more about tonality, in black and white or a single hue, while others combine a play of harmonious colors or complementary, contrasting hues.
Lewis has exhibited work at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Daemen University Visual and Performing Arts Center Gallery, and Big Orbit Gallery, among others. In 2018, his large-scale painting “Blue and Yellow,” acrylic on canvas, 72×60 in., was selected by musical artist Zak Ward as the cover art on all platforms for his album “Monologues.”
